Based on a goal of becoming a licensed drone pilot and only a time commitment of 3 hours per week, I have created a study plan for you. You’re Welcome! Just kidding… Here’s a plan to help you learn to fly drones and prepare for the FAA Part 107 knowledge test using video and PDF resources that’s taken me a while to develop. No more fluff… Here is the plan:
Week 1-2: Introduction to Drones and FAA Regulations
- Spend the first week familiarizing yourself with the basics of drones and FAA regulations.
- Start by watching the “Drone Basics” video series by DJI (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLpY71aEabTlSg6sGfs9Z2sU4gt2vPQeCc).
- Download and read the FAA’s Remote Pilot – Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems Study Guide (PDF): https://www.faa.gov/regulations_policies/handbooks_manuals/aviation/media/remote_pilot_study_guide.pdf.
Week 3-4: Aeronautical Knowledge Areas
- In these weeks, focus on studying the key aeronautical knowledge areas required for the Part 107 exam.
- Watch the “FAA Part 107 Test Study Guide” video series by Tony Northrup (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwIVVh7xkTLs9X4YMGugRlX_7z2qYw3-F).
- Review the FAA’s Part 107 Aeronautical Knowledge Test Areas (PDF): https://www.faa.gov/training_testing/testing/acs/media/uas_acs.pdf.
Week 5-6: Weather and Emergency Procedures
- Dedicate this time to understanding weather concepts and emergency procedures.
- Watch the “Weather Basics for Drone Pilots” video series by FliteTest (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLgJCOhs3TGqYGfapZxHzgMglTDIuE6F6_).
- Review the FAA’s Aviation Weather Services Guide (PDF): https://www.faa.gov/documentLibrary/media/Advisory_Circular/AC_00-45H.pdf.
- Read the Emergency Procedures section of the FAA’s Remote Pilot – Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems Study Guide.
Week 7-8: Airspace and Airport Operations
- Focus on understanding different airspace classifications and airport operations.
- Watch the “Airspace & Airport Operations” video series by Drone U (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3DwQ6jOTEvvM-f0OYYP3FzxCljgT8X_R).
- Review the FAA’s Aeronautical Information Manual (AIM) section on Airspace (PDF): https://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/publications/media/aim.pdf.
- Review the AIM section on Airport Operations (PDF).
Week 9-10: Practice Tests and Review
- Use these weeks to take practice tests and review any areas of weakness.
- Take the Part 107 practice tests provided by RemotePilot101 (https://remotepilot101.com/part-107-sample-test-questions/).
- Review the FAA’s Remote Pilot – Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems Study Guide and any specific topics or areas that need additional clarification.
Remember to schedule your FAA Part 107 knowledge test at a testing center once you feel prepared. Now, many of you will be able to cut this schedule in half or even complete it in a third of the time. I created this plan for everyone like me who has a job that consumes tons of hours each day. I also have to balance work life with home life. Because, without balance and enjoyment, then what’s the point? Anyway…
Please note that the provided resources are relevant and reliable, but it’s always a good idea to cross-reference information and stay updated with any changes or updates from the FAA. Good luck with your studies and your journey toward becoming a licensed drone pilot! If this helps you achieve success or you have more information that can help others, please let us know in the comments.
